Women's boat shoes are also referred to as deck shoes or top siders. They are made from leather or canvas and have rubber soles with a siping pattern cut into the bottom. The were invented by Paul Sperry. Sperry was an avid boater who loved the water. He was very familiar with the treacherous decks of boats that become quite slippery when wet. One day in the winter, Sperry noticed his dog slide back and forth across a frozen lake. He noticed that the doing was able to maintain traction better than humans.
