Introduction to Water Skiing and Tow Sports
Water skiing is an outdoor watersport where an individual using two boards as skis is pulled behind a boat by a rope, so that he glides along the water surface. BEST PLACES FOR WATERSKIING
Water skiing is highly popular in the West, since the atmospheric conditions allow for tranquil waters which are essential for water skiing. San Diego, California and West Palm Beach, Florida offer plenty of sunshine throughout the year and thus, year round water skiing is possible. The tranquil waters of Costa Rica also make for a good water skiing destination. Sheffield, England and France are other places which also have the right conditions for water skiing and are especially good for beginners. In Asia, Thailand is the favorite destination for many water skiers.
SAFETY TIPS
Proper safety measures should be followed in water skiing as it is a risky sport.
• A personal floatation device (PFD) or a life jacket should be worn at all times as it is very useful when one gets caught in a wave. Knowing how to swim is also essential.
• Before skiing, the surroundings should be checked. Shallow water areas and those with floating debris should be avoided.
• Water skiing should not be done in areas which have swimmers, as waves from the boat can be disruptive or even injurious to people in the water.
• It is important that there is a lookout on the boat so that he can notify the driver when the skier falls into the water. • The skis should be chosen carefully so that they fit well and feel comfortable. A proper wetsuit should be worn as apparel.
• Goggles should be worn while water skiing as they protect the eyes from the water which gets sprayed because of the boat. Ideally, goggles should come with a secure strap so that they don’t fall off while skiing.
• It is recommended that one not try jumps and maneuvers beyond their capabilities as it can lead to injuries.
• Hand signal protocol must be established with the boat personnel beforehand.
