Wakeboarding is a very popular, extreme water sport. It uses a combination of techniques drawn from surfing, snowboarding, and water skiing. The wakeboarder is pulled behind a boat while balancing on a board that he or she is riding on in a manner similar to how a snowboard or skate board is ridden. Wakeboarding requires a bit more skill and practice than many other water activities. The basic concept of wakeboarding is easy; however, the reality is that wakeboarding takes a great deal of practice and skill. To get started, a wakeboarder, while standing on a wakeboard, will hold on to a tow rope that is attached to a boat. Once everyone is ready, the boat will begin to move, eventually reaching speeds of 18 to 25 miles per hour. The waves, also known as the wake, that are created by the boat’s movement are used by the wakeboarder to jump over or to perform tricks. Wakeboarding was inspired by many sports, but in essence it was the evolution of a sport known as skurfing. This sport was popular in the 1980’s and basically involved a boat pulling a surf board and its rider behind it. Two men out of San Diego, California decided to take that idea a little bit further by shrinking the size of the boards that were pulled behind the boats, they were called skurfboards. From there the boards were redesigned by another person, so that they included bindings, in order to make them easier to ride. Finally, in 1990, wakeboarding came into existence by the invention of the first commercial wakeboard.
While wakeboarding is one of the most fun activities an individual can do on the water, it is also one of the most extreme. This is because when a person is wakeboarding he or she is traveling at a high rate of speed, which can lead to a hard impact onto the surface of the water, if he or she were to fall or miss a jump.
