Diving and Snorkeling

Most people, after having entered the enchanting world of diving and snorkeling, find that they never want to leave. These sports are perfect for those who are fascinated with underwater sights and sounds. Not only are these some of the best loved water sports in the world, numerous individuals have found a way to turn them into lucrative professions.

Many of the best scuba divers began with the sport of snorkeling. This is because snorkeling doe not require a high level of technical skill or training to be enjoyable. Scuba diving is a bit more complicated and requires special equipment so that adequate oxygen is available to the participant while he or she is underwater. When such equipment is used, scuba divers can remain submerged for hours, enjoying the amazing sights and experiences offered by the ocean. Snorkeling and diving are popular with water sports enthusiasts around the world, and classes are available for all skill levels, from beginners to professionals.  

The Appeal of Scuba Diving

Many men and women find diving and snorkeling appealing for a variety of reasons. Certain individuals find marine life and its scenery mesmerizing, such as the beautiful coral reefs seen throughout the world, and the many interesting creatures that make their home in the ocean. Thousands of visitors become hooked on these sports each year after viewing aquatic life face to face for the first time.

However, diving and snorkeling are not right for everyone. Those with health problems should consult a doctor or other medical professional before participating in underwater sports.

Children also enjoy snorkeling; however, it is not advisable for children under eight years of age to participate in underwater sports. Additionally, both adults and children should be competent swimmers before attempting to participate in other water sports.

Types

The three main diving categories are commercial, technical and recreational. Individuals who indulge in the latter do so simply to enjoy the beautiful underwater scenery and marine life. Once one becomes proficient in the sport, he or she may wish to try cave diving, deep diving or even night diving.

Technical diving is a sport that requires the use of more advanced equipment than the kind used by recreational divers. Only divers with a significant amount of experience should attempt technical diving. Commercial diving is a profession for which one is compensated. Commercial diving positions may include underwater construction, salvage work or map creation.  

Snorkeling and Diving Equipment

Scuba diving and snorkeling offer individuals an avenue through which outstanding undersea realms can be enjoyed. Snorkeling equipment is little more than a mask and fins, as one does not go very far under the water's surface when engaging in this sport. One should select a mask that fits properly so that he or she can breathe comfortably when underwater. Special masks are available for those who wear corrective lenses. The diver's fins should also fit appropriately so that the he or she does not experience cramps when swimming.

Scuba diving equipment is necessarily more complex. When participating in this sport, one is underwater for a longer length of time than when snorkeling. He or she is also submerged deeper under the water's surface. Standard scuba diving equipment consists of a buoyancy device and regulator tank, a scuba mask, dive light, signaling device, fins and a wetsuit. However, it is important to note that depending on where one is diving, this equipment may need to be modified.

Locations

Snorkeling and diving locations exist in numerous places across the globe. However, certain areas offer more stunning scenery and marine life than others, and the location selected is largely a matter of personal taste. Beginners sometimes choose locations that provide the highest level of safety, while experienced divers may be more interested in a spectacular view.

The Caribbean boasts a vast array of excellent dive locations, each of which has something unique to offer. Tiny Pacific islands such as Micronesia are also celebrated scuba diving locations. Chuuk, Guam and Palua are additional areas in which scuba divers can create the memories of a lifetime.
