These safety tips for snorkeling might seem rather silly, yet they can help save your life. Below we have listed some of the most important safety tips.

Never snorkel alone

Probably the most important tip you can follow is to snorkel with friends. Never go snorkeling alone. Many accidents that occur involve divers who went snorkeling alone. It is always safer to have a buddy with you to make sure you are not far away from help. Choose a friend you know well and are comfortable with.

Do not snorkel if you cannot swim

While this may sound very basic and fundamental, this is not a tip followed by all people who go snorkeling. If you are very tired and do not believe you have the strength to stay afloat, do not risk going into the water.

Do not stray far from the shore

People new to snorkeling generally misjudge their capabilities and try to test their limits by going far away from the shore. Be sure that you are close to the shore so that you are not at risk if you start to tire out.

Keep track of your surroundings

Be sure beforehand which areas are safe to snorkel at and which are potentially dangerous. If you are snorkeling at a location which you are unsure of, go with a friend or instructor who has gone snorkeling there, so that you do not get lost.

Try to conserve to your energy

Go snorkeling with some sort of floatation device. This could include a life vest or any other equipment. This will help you conserve your energy since you will not have to make an effort to stay above the surface of the water. In case you feel like going underwater, you can just take off the vest, and put it back on when you get back to the surface.

Do not touch the marine life

Most underwater species have defense mechanisms against touch. It might be very dangerous to touch some of the marine life. Be sure to stay away from puffer fish and stone fish, since they are very poisonous.

Be sure of the depth

When you snorkel in shallow waters, it is possible to get scratched against the surface of the corals or the rocks. If you begin to bleed in the water, you can attract predators to your location, in which case you need to get out of the water as quickly as possible.

If you follow the above tips, you should be able to snorkel safely and with ease.
